Another Direction screens at MN Historical Society’s 1968 Film Competition

In Reel Nomad's new short documentary, Another Direction, Dick Bancroft recalls some of his memories of 1968. This film was produced for the Minnesota Historical Society’s 1968 Film Competition in partnership with the Atlanta History Center, Chicago History Museum and the Oakland Museum of California. 1968 was a year when war raged, angry protests erupted everywhere, assassinations sent shock waves around the world and images of the whole Earth were beamed back from space for the first time. People say that the events of 1968 "rocked the world."

View all the short films entered in the "1968 Film Competition" and be present as awards are announced at the Minnesota History Center on Sunday, September 27th.

Lady of the Woods at Square Lake Film Festival

'Lady of the Woods', is screening at the Square Lake Film and Music Festival on Saturday, August 15th at 6:30pm. There is a great lineup of music and movies all day, so if you are in Minnesota come and check it out!

'Lady of the Woods' is about Alma Christensen, a self-taught botanist and expert on wild edibles. This film explores her coming of age in an Austrian immigrant family homesteading in central Minnesota. Hear about life on the farm, foraging for food, her education, and living and loving during “the hard days” and the war. Alma and I will be available after the screening to answer questions, talk about Alma's cookbook (For Soul and Kitchen), and describe edible plants that grow on the Square Lake Festival grounds. Cookbooks and DVDs will be available for purchase.

The 30 minute documentary "Prostitution: Beyond the Myths" takes a personal look at prostitution from women that have lived the lifestyle and have successfully gotten out. With intimate interviews of the women themselves along with experts who deal with prostitutes from a punitive or rehabilitative role (Hennepin community court judge, Minneapolis Vice Detective, Recovery counselors, community research group), the film demonstrates that once it is properly defined, prostitution person by person can be eliminated as a problem.

I just saw a documentary on PBS Point of View (POV) called Sierra Leone's Refugee All Stars. It was made by Zach Niles and Banker White. It is an amazing story of survival, and success. A group of refugee's come together as musicians that work at perfecting their songs, share a powerful message, and are able to touch the world. It is refreshing to see a story about Africa that is uplifting and empowering despite it's basis in war. Thank you Zach, Banker, and the All Stars!

In addition, PBS and Sierra Leone's Refugee All Stars are charting out interesting paths in the New Media world by providing viewers with the opportunity to make a Video Mash-Up music video using songs from the All Stars and video clips from the film and footage of the band on stage in Japan. Give it a shot, you could win an autographed CD and a T-shirt.

Film screening & silent auction to benefit Amnesty International

At 7 p.m., Tuesday, April 3, the Amnesty International Belle Plaine High School Student Group will look at a country where young people are in armies instead of classrooms.

A 20-year war in Northern Uganda has displaced thousands of children and killed many more. The Lord's Resistance Army (LRA) kidnaps children and forces them to become child soldiers.

The children must walk many miles at night to escape being kidnapped or killed. We will be hosting a Human Rights Informational Night with a movie screening of the documentary Invisible Children, which shows the horrors the children of Northern Uganda face daily. We will also have a silent auction.

Yesterday we went to see MN Filmmaker Melody Gilbert's new documentary, Urban Explorers: Into the Darkness, screen at the Walker Art Center's Women With Vision Film Festival. MN Women in Film and TV was well represented in the audience and several real life urban explorers were also present. During the Q&A after the screening, Melody was tossing out "I <3 Slim Jim" and "There's a Kink in the Rope" pins and one explorer suggested a new line of perfume, "Eew de Toilette."

The Februray 9th Minnesota Stories features some video I shot of the Art Shanties on Medicine Lake. Misfit toyes, art Cars, singing, puppet shows, fish stories, karaoke, lincoln logs, audio experiements, ice physics, and pin hole views of the lake were just a few of the varied themes at this year's Art Shanty Projects. It was one of those way below zero days, but I was having fun at the shanties and Denis was getting in some kiting so we stayed all day. Brrrr. Definitely a MN thing. I recently attended Science + Society: Closing the Gap, a conference in Boston, MA on January 19-21, 2007. Participants included a unique combination of scientists, educators, journalists, and media producers.

Keynote speakers Al Gore and Shirley Ann Jackson agreed with most participants that technology and media, including film and video as well as new media tools like social networking sites, interactive websites, and online video, are vital tools in increasing the science literacy of American citizens.

On October 16th, Jenny Hanson from Sprouted Wolf Productions had a special event for BUST!, a personal documentary-fiction that explores the relationships women have with their breasts. In it, Allison dreams of a real-life going party for a woman's breast after being asked to talk about her own breasts on camera. The movie follows her and several women as they discuss their expereinces growing up, breast feeding, altering their breasts, coming out, and coming to terms with their intimate parts as Allison struggles to find her own voice about her own body. Bust! looks intimately at the way women look at one of their most intimate and gender defining body parts.

The event was held at the Shamrock Room at O'Gara's Bar & Grill in Saint Paul, Minnesota and featured a special performance by singer/songwriter Edie Carey whose music is used in Bust!. Thanks Edie! What a great night!

On September 29 - October 1, 2006, Hackensack Minnesota hosted the second annual National Chainsaw Sculpting Invitational as part of it's "Fall Has It All" festivities. Ross Olsen from Flying Squirrel Studio in Hackensack and AJ Lutter from "Come See What I Saw" in Brainerd organized this event with the Hackensack Chamber of Commerce.

Carleton Geology makes Minnesota history with Eiler Henrickson: A Gentleman of Great Magnitude, a new short documentary about the life of Eiler Henrickson that will screen this Sunday, October 8, 2006, at the Minnesota Historical Society’s Minnesota’s Greatest Generation Film Initiative Moving Pictures Film Festival.

Eiler grew up in Deerwood Minnesota before coming to Carleton College where he graduated in 1939. After spending some time with the military and the United States Geological Survey, Eiler accepted Larry Gould’s invitation to come back to Carleton to teach geology and coach wrestling and football. The film explores some of the highlight’s in Eiler’s life, including major geology research projects and his recent induction into the National Wrestling Hall of Fame.

This film will screen along with more than 30 other films about members of Minnesota’s Greatest Generation. Read below to learn more about the event.

Bamako: The Court

"Some men sit outside the compound of a family house in the Malian village of Bamako. An ancient bullhorn-style speaker is draped over the wall by its wires, so people outside can listen to the trial within.A witness says that, difficult as they are, the problems the people are facing can be overcome. They just need to organize themselves. One of the men outside then saunters over and disconnects the speaker's wires so he can drink his tea in peace.

"This trial," he says to the fellow next to him, "is becoming annoying."

The moment comes well over halfway through "Bamako" ("The Court"), written and directed by award-winning filmmaker Abderrahmane Sissako. It's a self-conscious gesture, the aesthetic equivalent of having the rock star Bono stop during one of his mid-concert sermons to apologize for "bugging" his audience with the politics of African debt relief, or what have you."

Every year, the residents of Northfield Minnesota get together and celebrate the defeat of Jesse James. There is a bike race, parade, carnival, and robbery re-enactment. This years festivies took place on September 6-10, 2006. This video shows the re-enactment and carnival. The re-enactment scene was put together for the Northfield Historical Society as part of a video to highlight events that took place last year to celebrate Northfield's sesquicentennial. I have some exciting news! Bust!, a docu-fiction film that I recently edited, will screen as a work in progress today in Linz, Austria. It is gearing up for the festival circuit and is sure to grab people's attention and stimulate some good conversation and self reflection. It is a movie about women's relationships with their breasts. It explores society's sexualization of breasts and presents perspectives from several woman who reveal what their breasts mean to them. The day Christelle left, I met with some Minnesota Women in Film and Television (MN WIFT) friends at WCCO in Minneapolis. We got to meet with the news director and other staffers to talk about the behind the scenes of the news operation. We toured the facility and engineering staff reviewed equipment and discussed preparations for a switch to HD. Then we hung out on the roof top garden, and of course took advantage of a little photo op with the beautiful Minneapolis skyline.

1080p May Not Be What It Seems: "Many of us are confused about 1080p, the highest resolution in the ATSC spec book for high-definition TV. TG Daily talked with Bill Whalen, Senior Product Manager at Hitachi, who explains that while lots of TVs can take in 1080p, by the time that video is displayed it's down-rezzed to either 720p or 768p. Whelan says 1080p LCD panels are still too expensive to produce and might be more practical in 2007 or 2008. He adds that it's important to consider how you'll be using such resolution:'If you watch TV in a distance that is less than three times the screen height of your TV, then 1080p is worth the wait.
